Everything you need to know before renting your car in AlbaniaBooking & Reservations
Pick your pickup and drop-off locations and dates on the home page, browse the available cars, and select the one that fits your needs. You can complete the booking in minutes, online, with no calls or paperwork.
Yes. Most changes (dates, locations, extras) can be requested up until the pickup time. Some adjustments depend on the dealer's availability. Contact the dealer through our in-app messaging to coordinate any change.
You may cancel your booking free of charge up to 7 days before the scheduled car pick-up date. In this case, you will receive a full refund of your payment.
Once your booking is confirmed, you can chat directly with the dealer through our in-app messaging — download the RentX mobile app from Google Play or the App Store to use it. Alternatively, you can reach the dealer by email or WhatsApp using the contact details shown on your booking confirmation.
Pricing & Payment
Yes. The price you see at checkout is the price you pay — taxes, mandatory fees and basic insurance are included. RentX is fully transparent: no hidden fees, ever.
We accept all major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) as well as PayPal. Some dealers also accept cash on pickup — this is indicated on the rental details page.
Yes — most dealers ask for a security deposit paid in cash at pickup. The deposit is fully refunded in cash when you return the car, provided it is given back in the same condition. The amount depends on the car and the insurance package you choose, and is clearly displayed on the rental details page.
Prices are shown in EUR, USD or ALL. You can switch currency at any time from the top navigation bar. Final charges are converted at the exchange rate of your bank or card provider.
Insurance & Damage
Every rental on RentX includes a basic insurance package. On the rental details page you can upgrade to MiniCasco or FullCasco for broader protection. Read more on our Insurance information page. Insurance information
The deductible (excess) depends on the package you choose. BasicTpl has the highest deductible, MiniCasco reduces it significantly, and FullCasco usually brings it to zero. The exact amount is shown next to each insurance option.
Make sure everyone is safe, call 129 (police) and 127 (ambulance) if needed, then contact the dealer immediately through the RentX app. Take photos of the scene and request an official accident report — it is required for the insurance to apply.
Driver Requirements
Age requirements vary by car and dealer. The exact minimum age and any conditions are stated clearly in the rental policies section on the rental details page, so you always know what applies before you book.
A valid driving license held for at least one year is required. EU, UK, US, Canadian and most other national licenses are accepted. If your license is not in the Latin alphabet, please bring an International Driving Permit.
Yes. You can add one or more additional drivers during checkout or at pickup. The same license and age requirements apply to every driver. Some dealers offer the first additional driver for free.
Pickup, Drop-off & Travel
Yes. Most of our dealers offer pickup and drop-off at Tirana International Airport (TIA). Choose the airport as your pickup or drop-off location during search, or pick the option on the rental details page.
If you expect to be late, contact the dealer through the app as soon as possible — many will accommodate a short delay free of charge. Beyond a short grace period, an extra-day rate may apply.
Cross-border travel (Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Greece) is allowed by many dealers but must be approved in advance. A border-crossing fee or extended insurance may apply. Always confirm with the dealer before booking if you plan to leave Albania.
During Your Rental
Almost all RentX dealers operate a 'same-to-same' policy: you receive the car with a given fuel level and return it at the same level. The exact policy is displayed on the rental details page.
Most rentals come with unlimited mileage within Albania. Some long-term or premium rentals may include a daily limit, which is stated clearly on the rental details before booking.
Vehicle & Extras
During the booking process you can select extras such as child seats, GPS navigation, additional drivers, snow chains and more. See our Rental Extras page for the full list. Rental Extras
Yes — child seats, booster seats and infant seats are offered as paid extras by most dealers. Please book them in advance so the right size is reserved for you.
Smoking is not permitted in any RentX vehicle and a cleaning fee will apply if the policy is breached. Pets are welcome with most dealers when transported in a carrier — please confirm with the dealer before pickup.
Driving in Albania
Albania drives on the right, like the rest of mainland Europe. Overtaking is on the left. Rules largely follow the Vienna Convention — if you have driven in Italy, France or Germany you will feel right at home.
Standard limits are 40 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h on rural roads and 110 km/h on motorways (the A1, A2 and A3 corridors). Limits are signposted and police speed checks are common around city exits and on the SH4.
The main motorways and the SH8 coastal road are paved and in good condition. Mountain routes to Theth, the Llogara pass, Voskopoja and other inland villages can be narrow, winding and partially unpaved — a higher-clearance car or SUV is recommended for those areas.
Tirana, Durrës and Vlora use paid blue-zone street parking with hourly tariffs paid via meters or the local app. In smaller coastal towns like Ksamil parking is mostly informal — look for marked private lots near the beach.
Top destinations & routes
From Tirana, drive south on the SH4 to Vlora, then take the SH8 over the Llogara pass to Dhërmi, Himara, Borsh, Saranda and Ksamil. The full Tirana–Saranda drive takes about 4½ to 5 hours; many travellers split it across 2–3 days, stopping at beaches along the way.
Shkodra is reached easily on the SH1 from Tirana (about 1h45). The Theth and Valbona valleys deeper in the Alps require careful driving on narrow paved-and-gravel mountain roads — plan a half-day each way and confirm with the dealer that your rental allows mountain travel.
Yes. Berat is around 2h south of Tirana via the SH4; Gjirokastra is about 1h30 further south. Both UNESCO old towns have steep cobbled streets — park at the lots at the base of the citadel and walk up rather than driving inside the historic centres.
Popular day trips include Krujë (45 min), Durrës beach (45 min), Berat (2h), Pogradec on Lake Ohrid (2h30) and Shkodra with Lake Skadar (1h45). Most are easy out-and-back drives on motorways or major SH roads.
Practical travel tips
Albania's official currency is the Lek (ALL). Euros are widely accepted in tourist areas and at many fuel stations, but the rate is often poor — for daily expenses outside the main resorts, use Lek from an ATM or a licensed exchange office. Cards are accepted in most hotels, supermarkets and larger restaurants.
Fuel stations are plentiful on motorways and around towns and accept cards. They become sparser on mountain roads and after sunset in remote areas — fill up before heading to Theth, Valbona, the Llogara pass or any inland village route.
112 is the European emergency number and works for all services. You can also dial 129 for police, 127 for ambulance and 128 for the fire brigade. In case of an accident with a rental car, also contact your dealer through the RentX app.
Late May to early October is the warmest and driest, with peak season in July–August (busy beaches and higher prices). May, June and September offer the best balance of weather, prices and quiet roads. The Alps are accessible roughly from mid-May to late October.
