Car rental insurance in Albania: TPL, MiniCasco & FullCasco explained

Choosing the right insurance is one of the most important decisions when you rent a car. This guide explains the three levels offered by dealers on RentX, what they usually cover, and what they don't.

On RentX, insurance is offered by each rental company (dealer), not by RentX. Every listing shows the packages that dealer offers and their daily price. The descriptions below are typical — the exact cover, excess and exclusions are those in your rental contract, so always confirm them with the dealer before pickup.

  1. Basic TPL (Third Party Liability)
  2. MiniCasco
  3. FullCasco

Basic TPL (Third Party Liability)

Third Party Liability insurance is mandatory for every vehicle in Albania and is included in every rental. It pays for damage and injuries you cause to other people, their vehicles and their property.

Basic TPL does not cover damage to the rental car itself. If you damage the car, or nobody else can be held responsible, you pay for the repair — usually up to the amount of the security deposit or more, as stated in your rental contract.

MiniCasco

MiniCasco is partial cover for damage to the rental car. What "partial" means differs from dealer to dealer: some cover a fixed percentage of the damage (for example 50% or 80%, with you paying the rest), others cover only collisions while driving, or damage up to a set amount.

MiniCasco usually requires an official police report and does not cover parking damage, glass, tyres or the underbody. Ask the dealer what percentage or amount is covered before you choose it.

FullCasco

FullCasco is the most complete cover. It usually covers damage to the rental car from accidents — including those you cause — as well as parking damage, theft, fire and natural events, typically with a reduced or zero excess and a lower or no security deposit.

FullCasco is not always the same as zero excess, and it is not unlimited. It almost always requires an official police report for any damage, and the exclusions below still apply. Check the excess and what is excluded in your rental contract.

Excess and security deposit

The excess (deductible) is the maximum amount you pay yourself if the car is damaged. The security deposit is the amount the dealer holds at pickup, in cash or on a card, to cover the excess, fines or missing fuel. Typical deposits on RentX are around €100–€500 with Basic TPL, and lower or zero with FullCasco. The deposit is returned when you bring the car back, minus any amount you owe under the rental contract — ask for a written explanation of any deduction.

What insurance usually does not cover

  • Damage without an official police report, including in car parks
  • Damage to the underbody, tyres and wheels, unless your package lists them
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, speeding or reckless driving
  • Off-road or unpaved roads where the dealer does not allow them
  • Drivers not named in the rental contract
  • Driving outside Albania without the dealer's written permission and a Green Card

If you plan to drive on mountain or gravel roads (for example to Theth or Valbona), or to cross a border, tell the dealer before booking and make sure the permission is written in your rental contract.

Buying insurance at pickup

Some dealers offer to upgrade your insurance when you collect the car. That agreement is between you and the dealer, outside RentX, so ask for its terms in writing — the excess, the deposit and what is excluded. If you can, choose your insurance when booking on RentX instead: it is shown in your booking and RentX can help if there is a disagreement.

If you have an accident

Make sure everyone is safe and call 112 (or 129 for police) if needed. Do not move the car before the police arrive, and ask for the official police report — without it, insurance usually does not pay. Take photos of the scene and of all vehicles, exchange details with the other driver, then contact the dealer immediately. If the dealer does not respond, contact RentX support through the app.

How to Choose the Right Insurance

Consider how and where you plan to drive. Basic TPL can be enough for short city trips if you accept paying for any damage to the car. For longer trips, mountain roads, the Albanian Riviera, night driving or busy city parking, MiniCasco or FullCasco is strongly recommended.

Compare the total cost, not just the daily price: a car with FullCasco and no deposit can cost less overall than a cheaper car with Basic TPL and a €500 deposit. You choose the insurance level when booking, and the price is shown before you pay.

Important to knowWarning

This page is general information only and is not an insurance policy. RentX is a marketplace of registered rental companies and does not sell insurance itself. Each dealer and its insurer set their own terms, and the terms in your rental contract always prevail. Ask the dealer through the RentX chat to confirm the cover, excess and exclusions before you pick up the car.

Who provides the insurance?

Insurance is provided by the rental company you book with, through insurers licensed in Albania and supervised by the Albanian Financial Supervisory Authority (AMF). The insurer for your car is named in the rental contract you sign at pickup.
